Tora Berger is a famous retired Norwegian biathlete. She was born on March 18, 1981. Tora is an Olympic champion.

About Tora Berger

Tora Berger got married in 2010. She met her husband when they were in high school. Tora also has two dogs. Her older brother, Lars Berger, is also a biathlete and a cross-country skier.

Tora's Biathlon Career

Tora Berger joined the Norwegian women's biathlon team in 1999. She won 28 individual races in the World Cup during her career.

At the 2008 World Championship, Tora finished fourth three times. She then won a silver medal in the mass start race.

Olympic Gold Medal

On February 18, 2010, Tora made history at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. She became the first Norwegian woman to win an Olympic gold medal in biathlon. She won the 15 km individual race. This medal was also Norway's 100th gold medal at the Winter Olympics. It was Norway's 10th biathlon gold medal. This made Norway the first country to reach 100 gold medals at the Winter Olympic Games.

World Championship Success

At the Biathlon World Championships 2012 in Ruhpolding, Tora won two gold medals. She won the 15 km individual race and the 12.5 km mass start.

The Biathlon World Championships 2013 in Nove Mesto were amazing for Tora. She won a medal in every race she entered! She took gold in the mixed relay. She also won a silver in the sprint and a gold in the pursuit. Tora was the first woman to win the 15 km individual title two times in a row. She then had a fantastic final leg in the relay race. She caught up from almost 40 seconds behind to win another gold medal. She also earned a silver medal in the mass start.

Tora Berger has 18 World Championship medals. This places her second in total medals, just one behind Uschi Disl. At the 2013 championships, she also became the first biathlete, male or female, to win six medals at one World Championship. She won four golds and two silvers.

Sochi Olympics 2014

Tora competed in Biathlon at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. She won three more medals there. She earned a gold medal in the mixed relay. She raced with Tiril Eckhoff, Ole Einar Bjørndalen, and Emil Hegle Svendsen. She also won a silver medal in the women's pursuit. Finally, she took another silver in the women's relay.

IBU World Cup Achievements

Tora Berger had been part of the Norwegian biathlon team since 1999. Before the 2012–13 season, she had not won the overall World Cup title. Her best overall finish was third place in 2008–09 and 2011–12.

Her biggest success came in the 2012–13 World Cup season. Tora won 11 races and was on the podium 19 times. This tied Magdalena Forsberg's record for the most podium finishes in one season. She won all three races in Oslo Holmenkollen. This helped her win the crystal globes for the Overall women's World Cup and the Pursuit discipline. By the end of the season, she had won crystal globes for all five women's disciplines: Individual, Sprint, Pursuit, and Mass Start. This was a rare achievement, last done by Magdalena Forsberg in 2001–02. Tora's efforts also helped Norway win the Women's Nation Cup, Women's Relay Cup, and Mixed Relay Cup in 2012–13.
