About Emma's Life
Emma Ferreira was born in Buckinghamshire, England. She grew up as an only child. Her mother is English, and her father has both Indian and Caribbean family roots. From a young age, Emma wanted to explore the world beyond her quiet hometown. This led her to leave art school and travel a lot.
In an interview, Emma said that while learning in school is important, she believes traveling is "the best form of education." She also shared that her travels are what inspire her art and creativity.
Emma has lived in Los Angeles since 1998. She studied art at Otis College of Art and Design and photography at Santa Monica College. It was her photography course that made her love taking pictures even more.
Her Art and Career
Emma Ferreira uses different materials in her art, like acrylic paints, shiny metallic paints, and resins. She also adds special items from her own memories. This unique way of working has quickly caught the eye of art critics and collectors. In an interview, Emma explained that she wants to capture energy in her art. She believes being aware of human energy helps her succeed.
Many companies have bought her artwork. She also has a long list of private collectors, including famous musicians, movie stars, and producers.
Emma's first photography art show in Los Angeles was at the Terrell Moore Gallery. A famous photographer named Bob Richardson helped edit the photos for this show.
What is TROMI?
TROMI is Emma Ferreira's most recent art project. The name stands for "The Reality of my Illusion," and it has also become her own art brand. The main idea behind TROMI is that our dreams can come true if we use the opportunities we have. Emma says these opportunities are freedom, choice, and desire.
Like the idea of existentialism, TROMI focuses on our personal freedom. It highlights that we are responsible for giving our lives meaning. It also encourages us to follow our desires with great passion.
Emma shows this idea in her art by mixing different materials with photography. She has a special way of printing photos onto materials like clear acrylic or glass. She then layers these see-through panels. This makes the picture seem to float and allows you to see it from both sides. This creates an art style that looks light and dream-like. Emma has even created her own names for these art techniques: "Layerism" and "Translayerism."
Layerism and Translayerism
Layerism is a technique Emma uses in most of her art. It means layering different materials, like flat or textured sheets of paper. These papers might have words, phrases, or images on them. By layering them, she creates an effect that mixes careful planning with spontaneous ideas. Layerism can use any items that can be stacked to make an art piece.
Translayerism is a mix of transparency and Layerism. It uses the same style and technique as Layerism but adds clear or see-through elements. This allows light and energy to move freely within the artwork.
For Emma, layering has become a way to think about life. She believes that just as her art has many layers, our lives do too. The clear and see-through parts in her art represent the space between these layers in our lives. Emma calls herself both a layerist and a translayerist.
Kiss of the Gypsy
Kiss of the Gypsy is the name of Emma Ferreira's current project. It is a coffee table book and a worldwide art show. The book features photographs taken in hotel rooms around the world. The name comes from an old story about a gypsy's kiss that can change how someone sees the world. How much it changes depends on if the person believes in the kiss's power.
The art in this book follows the same ideas as Emma's TROMI project. Kiss of the Gypsy explores Emma's belief that exploring new things is key to living. It also shows how freedom, desire, and intention are very important. Emma takes all the photos in this collection, and she is also the subject in them. She uses a special style where both the camera and she move at the same time to create a sense of motion.
