Emmanuel Frémiet (born December 6, 1824, died September 10, 1910) was a famous French sculptor. He was known for creating incredible statues, especially of animals and important historical figures.

One of his most famous works is the 1874 statue of Joan of Arc in Paris. You can also find similar statues in Philadelphia and Portland, Oregon. He also made a large monument for Ferdinand de Lesseps in Suez. Many students, like the sculptor Pierre-Nicolas Tourgueneff, learned from Frémiet.

Early Life and Artistic Beginnings

Emmanuel Frémiet was born in Paris, France. He learned a lot about art from his aunt, Sophie Fremiet, and her husband, François Rude. Rude was also a very well-known sculptor.

Frémiet loved to sculpt animals, a style known as animalier sculpture. He started his career by drawing animals for scientific books. In 1843, when he was just 19, he showed his first sculpture, a Gazelle, at an art show called the Salon in Paris.

He quickly became known for his powerful animal sculptures. In 1850, he created Wounded Bear and Wounded Dog. These sculptures were so impressive that the Luxembourg Museum bought them right away.

In the 1850s, Frémiet created several sculptures related to Emperor Napoleon III. He even made bronze statues of Napoleon III's basset hounds for the Paris Salon in 1853. From 1855 to 1859, he worked on a series of small military statues for Napoleon III.

Frémiet also created grand equestrian statues, which are statues of people on horseback. In 1868, he made a statue of Napoleon I. In 1869, he completed a statue of Louis d'Orleans for the Château de Pierrefonds.

His most famous equestrian statue is the first one of Joan of Arc. It was put up in the Place des Pyramides in Paris in 1874. He later replaced it with an updated version in 1889. During this time, he also sculpted Pan and the Bear Cubs, which is now in the Musée d'Orsay.

Famous Animal Sculptures

In 1887, Frémiet showed his sculpture Gorilla Carrying off a Woman. This artwork earned him a special medal at the Salon. It shows a large ape with a spear wound, carrying a woman and a stone weapon. This sculpture caused a lot of discussion at the time. Today, it is seen as one of his most important works.

Another notable animal sculpture is his Ourang-Outangs and Borneo Savage from 1895. The Paris Museum of Natural History asked him to create this piece.

Frémiet also made the statue of Saint Michael for the top of the Eglise St Michel's spire. He created an equestrian statue of Velasquez for the Jardin de l'Infante at the Louvre museum.

In 1878, he was honored as an Officer of the French Legion of Honor. In 1892, he became a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. He also took over from Antoine-Louis Barye as a professor. He taught animal drawing at the Natural History Museum of Paris.

Emmanuel Frémiet passed away on September 10, 1910, in Paris. He was buried in the Cimetière de Louveciennes.
