Enfield is a small town located in Tompkins County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 3,401 people lived there.

The Town of Enfield is on the western edge of Tompkins County. It is located west of the city of Ithaca.

History of Enfield

Early Days and Formation

In 1779, a group called the Sullivan Expedition traveled through this area. Later, this land became part of the Central New York Military Tract. This was a special area set aside for soldiers who fought in the American Revolutionary War.

The first settlers arrived in Enfield around 1804. The town of Enfield was officially created in 1821. It was formed from a part of another town called Ulysses.

Size and Borders

Enfield covers a total area of about 36.9 square miles (95.4 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a very small part, about 0.04 square miles (0.1 square kilometers), is water.

The western border of Enfield is shared with Schuyler County. To the north, Enfield borders the Town of Ulysses. To the south, it borders the Town of Newfield. The eastern border of Enfield is close to the Town of Ithaca and Cayuga Lake. Cayuga Lake is one of the famous Finger Lakes in New York.

Main Roads

New York State Route 79 is a main road that runs east to west through Enfield. It crosses another important road, New York State Route 327, at a spot called Millers Corners.
