Enges is a small town, also called a municipality, in the country of Switzerland. It is located in the canton (like a state) of Neuchâtel.

Enges: A Look at Its Past

Enges is quite old! It was first written about in the year 1178. Back then, it was called en Enge. Later, in 1212, people started calling it Einge.

Exploring the Geography of Enges

Enges covers an area of about 9.6 square kilometers (which is about 3.7 square miles). A big part of this land, almost 46%, is used for farming. Even more, about 51.6%, is covered by forests. The rest, a small 2.2%, has buildings and roads.

Within the forests, nearly half of the total land is dense woodland. A small part has orchards or groups of trees. For farming, about 15% of the land grows crops. The rest is used for pastures where animals graze.

Enges includes a small village called Lordel. It also has three places where people stay during different seasons in the mountains. These are Cressier, Enges, and Grange Vallier. Until 2018, Enges was part of the Neuchâtel district. Now, the district system has changed.

Understanding the Enges Coat of Arms

The coat of arms for Enges is very special. It shows a black grouse bird walking on a golden background at the top. Below that, on a blue background, there's a silver "gorge" (which means a narrow valley or canyon) with green pine trees. This design tells a story about the area's nature and landscape.
