Savagnier was once a small town, or municipality, located in the Val-de-Ruz district. It was part of the canton of Neuchâtel in Switzerland.

On January 1, 2013, Savagnier joined with many other towns to form a new, larger municipality. These towns included Boudevilliers, Cernier, Chézard-Saint-Martin, Coffrane, Dombresson, Engollon, Fenin-Vilars-Saules, Fontainemelon, Fontaines, Les Geneveys-sur-Coffrane, Les Hauts-Geneveys, Montmollin, Le Pâquier, and Villiers. Together, they all became part of the new municipality called Val-de-Ruz.

History of Savagnier

Savagnier is a very old place. It was first written about in the year 1143. Back then, its name was spelled Savaigner. This shows that the area has been settled for a long time.

Geography and Landscape

Savagnier covers an area of about 8.6 square kilometers (3.3 square miles). A large part of this land, almost half, is used for farming. About 42.7% of the area is covered by forests.

The rest of the land is used for buildings and roads, making up about 7.1%. A small amount, 0.2%, is made up of rivers. The remaining 0.7% is land that cannot be used for farming or building.

Most of the forested land is covered with thick, heavy trees. The farming land is used for growing crops and for pastures where animals graze.

Savagnier is located in the Val-de-Ruz district. It stretches from the slopes of the Chaumont mountain, which is about 1,270 meters (4,167 feet) high, down to the banks of the Seyon river. The area includes two smaller communities called hamlets: Le Grand-Savagnier and Le Petit-Savagnier.

Savagnier's Coat of Arms

The coat of arms for Savagnier is quite special. It features a blue background. On this background, there is a golden lion standing on its back legs. The lion has a red tongue and red claws. It holds a small shield in its front paws. This small shield is the coat of arms of Neuchâtel, which is gold with three silver chevron shapes on a red stripe.

Population and People

In 2011, Savagnier had a population of 1,196 people. A small part of the population, about 9.3% in 2008, were people from other countries living there. Over ten years, from 2000 to 2010, the population grew by 35.4%. Most of this growth was due to people moving into the area.

Most people in Savagnier speak French. In 2000, about 92.9% of the population spoke French as their main language. The second most common language was German, spoken by 3.7% of the people. A smaller number, 1.1%, spoke Portuguese.

In 2008, the population was almost evenly split between males and females. About 50.1% were male and 49.9% were female. Most residents were Swiss citizens.

In 2000, about 29.3% of the people living in Savagnier were born there. Another 38.8% were born in the same canton of Neuchâtel. About 18.6% were born in other parts of Switzerland, and 11.2% were born outside of Switzerland.

Children and teenagers (ages 0–19) made up 29.1% of the population in 2000. Adults (ages 20–64) were the largest group, at 62%. Seniors (over 64 years old) made up 8.9%.

In 2000, there were 338 households in Savagnier. On average, there were 2.6 people living in each home. About 80 households had only one person, while 33 households had five or more people. Most apartments were lived in all year round.

Economy and Jobs

In 2010, the unemployment rate in Savagnier was 3.5%. This means a small number of people who wanted to work could not find jobs.

In 2008, many people worked in different types of jobs:

Religion in Savagnier

According to the 2000 census, people in Savagnier followed different religions:

  • About 19.4% were Roman Catholic.
  • About 48.5% belonged to the Swiss Reformed Church.
  • A small number of people belonged to other Christian churches, including Orthodox and Christian Catholic.
  • There was also one person who was Islamic and one who was Buddhist.
  • About 23.59% of the population said they did not belong to any church or were agnostic or atheist.

Education System

In Savagnier, many people have completed a good level of education. About 41.7% of the population finished non-mandatory upper secondary education. This is like high school. Another 12.5% went on to higher education, like university.

The canton of Neuchâtel has a specific education system:

  • Most towns offer two years of non-mandatory kindergarten.
  • This is followed by five years of mandatory primary education.
  • Then, there are four years of mandatory secondary education. Students often travel to larger schools for this.

In the 2010–11 school year, Savagnier had 1.5 kindergarten classes with 30 students. It also had 6 primary classes with 120 students.

In 2000, only 4 students came to Savagnier for school from other towns. However, 82 students who lived in Savagnier went to schools outside the municipality.
