Les Geneveys-sur-Coffrane was once a town, also known as a municipality, in Switzerland. It was located in the Val-de-Ruz district, which is part of the Neuchâtel canton.
On January 1, 2013, Les Geneveys-sur-Coffrane joined with many other towns. These towns included Boudevilliers, Cernier, Chézard-Saint-Martin, Coffrane, Dombresson, Engollon, Fenin-Vilars-Saules, Fontainemelon, Fontaines, Les Hauts-Geneveys, Montmollin, Le Pâquier, Savagnier, and Villiers. Together, they formed a new, larger municipality called Val-de-Ruz.

History of Les Geneveys-sur-Coffrane
The town of Les Geneveys-sur-Coffrane was first mentioned around the year 1342. At that time, it was known by the name Geneveis sus Corfranoz.
Geography and Location
Les Geneveys-sur-Coffrane covered an area of about 7.9 square kilometers (3 square miles) in 2009. A large part of this land, about 52.3%, was used for farming. Forests covered another 39.4% of the area. The remaining 8.1% was built-up with buildings and roads.
Most of the built-up area was for houses and other buildings. Roads and other transport areas made up a smaller part. In the forests, about 36% of the land was heavily wooded. A small part, 3.4%, had orchards or small groups of trees. For farming, 13.9% of the land was used for growing crops. Another 13.4% was for pastures, and 24.9% was for mountain pastures.
The town was located in the Val-de-Ruz district. It sat at the bottom of a mountain called Mont Racine, which is 1,439 meters (4,721 feet) high. The SBB-CFF-FFS train line, which connects Neuchâtel to La Chaux-de-Fonds, also runs through the area.

The coat of arms for Les Geneveys-sur-Coffrane has a special design. It is blue with three red "chevronelles," which look like upside-down V-shapes. At the top of the shield, there are two golden five-pointed stars.
Population and People
In 2011, Les Geneveys-sur-Coffrane had a population of 1,490 people. In 2008, about 24.9% of the people living there were foreign nationals. Over ten years, from 2000 to 2010, the population grew by 8.2%. This growth was partly due to people moving in and out (4.8%) and partly due to births and deaths (4.7%).
Most people in the town spoke French as their main language in 2000, about 81.4%. Portuguese was the second most common language, spoken by 6.7% of the population. Italian was third, spoken by 3.2%. A smaller number of people spoke German or Romansh.
In 2008, the population was almost evenly split between males (50.8%) and females (49.2%). Most residents were Swiss citizens. About 20.3% of the people in 2000 were born in Les Geneveys-sur-Coffrane itself. Many others were born in the same canton or elsewhere in Switzerland. About 29.2% of the population was born outside of Switzerland.
In 2000, children and teenagers (up to 19 years old) made up 24.1% of the population. Adults (20-64 years old) were the largest group at 63.7%. Seniors (over 64 years old) made up 12.3%.
The town had 558 private households in 2000, with about 2.4 people living in each home on average. Most apartments were lived in all the time. A small number were used only during certain seasons or were empty.

Economy and Jobs

Education and Schools
Education is important in Les Geneveys-sur-Coffrane. About 34.1% of the people had finished upper secondary education, which is like high school. Another 10.6% had gone on to higher education, such as university or a specialized college (Fachhochschule).
In the canton of Neuchâtel, most towns offer two years of non-mandatory kindergarten. After that, there are five years of mandatory primary school. The next four years of mandatory secondary school are taught at larger schools. Many students travel to these schools outside their home town.
Les Geneveys-sur-Coffrane shared its kindergarten with the towns of Montmollin and Coffrane. The primary school was also shared with Coffrane. In the 2010-2011 school year, there were 3 kindergarten classes with 43 students. In the same year, there were 7 primary classes with 139 students.
In 2000, 8 students living in other towns came to Les Geneveys-sur-Coffrane for school. At the same time, 140 students from Les Geneveys-sur-Coffrane went to schools outside the town.
