Les Hauts-Geneveys was once a small town, or municipality, in the Val-de-Ruz area of Neuchâtel, a canton in Switzerland. It is no longer a separate municipality.

On January 1, 2013, Les Hauts-Geneveys joined with many other towns. These included Boudevilliers, Cernier, Chézard-Saint-Martin, Coffrane, Dombresson, Engollon, Fenin-Vilars-Saules, Fontainemelon, Fontaines, Les Geneveys-sur-Coffrane, Montmollin, Le Pâquier, Savagnier, and Villiers. All these towns became part of a new, larger municipality called Val-de-Ruz.

History of Les Hauts-Geneveys

Les Hauts-Geneveys has a long history. It was first written about in the year 1342. Back then, it was known as Geneveis sus Fontannes.

Later, in 1599, its name changed. It was then called Haultz Geneveys. This name is very similar to its more recent name.

Les Hauts-Geneveys covered an area of about 8 square kilometers (3 square miles) in 2009. A large part of this land was used for farming. About 48.8% of the area was farmland.

Forests covered a big portion too, about 45.2% of the land. The rest of the land, about 6.3%, had buildings or roads. This shows it was a mix of nature and human settlement.

It is part of the Jura mountains. From this high spot, you can see amazing views. You can look down into the Val de Ruz valley. You can also see the Swiss plateau and even the Swiss Alps on a clear day.

Natural Features of Les Hauts-Geneveys

The former municipality includes a small part of the Val de Ruz valley. It stretches westwards up a wooded slope called Forêt de la Baume. This slope is part of the Tête de Ran mountain.

Further west, on the Jura highlands, there are large meadows. You can also find isolated groups of spruce trees. The highest point in Les Hauts-Geneveys is 1,422 meters (4,665 feet) high. This spot is on the Rochers Bruns, part of the Tête de Ran ridge.
