Montmollin was once a small town, or municipality, located in the Val-de-Ruz area of Neuchâtel, a canton (like a state) in Switzerland.

On January 1, 2013, Montmollin joined with several other towns. These included Boudevilliers, Cernier, Chézard-Saint-Martin, Coffrane, Dombresson, Engollon, Fenin-Vilars-Saules, Fontainemelon, Fontaines, Les Geneveys-sur-Coffrane, Les Hauts-Geneveys, Le Pâquier, Savagnier, and Villiers. Together, they formed a new, larger municipality called Val-de-Ruz.

History of Montmollin

Montmollin is quite old! The first time it was ever written about was in the year 1347. Back then, it was called Mommolens. A few years later, in 1372, its name was written as Montmolens.

Geography and Landscape

Montmollin covers an area of about 4.1 square kilometers (which is about 1.6 square miles). A big part of this land, about 57%, is used for farming. This means there are fields for crops and places for animals to graze.

Another large part, about 36%, is covered by forests. The rest of the land, about 6%, has buildings and roads. A tiny bit, less than 1%, is land that can't be used for anything.

Montmollin is located on the far western side of the Val-de-Ruz valley.

The official symbol, or coat of arms, for Montmollin is quite simple. It shows a golden mill sitting on top of a green hill, all against a blue background. The word Azure means blue, Vert means green, and Or means gold.

People of Montmollin

In 2011, Montmollin had a population of 568 people. Over the ten years before that (from 2000 to 2010), the number of people living there grew by about 14%.

Most people in Montmollin speak French as their main language. About 90% of the population speaks French. A smaller number of people speak German (about 4%) or English (about 1.7%).

In 2000, about 23% of the population were children and teenagers (under 20 years old). Adults (aged 20-64) made up about 65% of the population. Seniors (over 64 years old) were about 12% of the population.
