Enoree River facts for kids
The Enoree River is a river in South Carolina, United States. It flows for about 85 miles (137 km). The Enoree River is a tributary, which means it's a smaller river that flows into a larger one. It joins the Broad River. From there, its waters travel through the Congaree River and then the Santee River. Finally, the water reaches the Atlantic Ocean. This whole area is called the river's watershed.
Where the Enoree River Flows
The Enoree River starts in the Blue Ridge Mountains foothills. This is in Greenville County, South Carolina. It begins near a town called Travelers Rest.
The river then flows mostly southeast. It crosses the Piedmont region. Along its path, it goes through or borders several counties. These include Spartanburg, Laurens, Union, and Newberry Counties.
The Enoree River also passes by towns like Taylors and Whitmire. Part of its journey takes it through the Sumter National Forest. The river eventually flows into the Broad River. This happens in Newberry County, northeast of the town of Newberry.
What's in a Name?
The Enoree River has had a few different names over time. According to the Geographic Names Information System, it was once called:

- Ennoree River
- Ganoree
The name "Enoree" is believed to come from the Cherokee language. It might mean "river of muscadines". Muscadines are a type of grape that grows in the southeastern United States.
Enoree River and Power
For many years, the Enoree River helped make electricity. A special dam was built at a place called Van Patton Shoals. This dam used the river's moving water to create hydroelectric power.
The power plant started working in 1907. It provided electricity to the nearby town of Woodruff. However, the dam was taken down in 1968.
