The Battle of Acosta Ñu
A very important battle in the Paraguayan War happened here on August 16, 1869. This was the Battle of Acosta Ñu. The Paraguayan army had about 6,000 soldiers. Many of them were older people, children, teenagers, women, and those who were not fully able to fight. They faced 20,000 soldiers from Brazil and Argentina.
The battle started with an attack on the Paraguayan positions. It lasted for eight hours. The Paraguayans then moved back to a strong defense area. This area was later destroyed by Brazilian cannons. The remaining defenders formed a square around their cannons. However, a large Brazilian cavalry charge broke this formation. Even so, the remaining Paraguayans managed to scatter the cavalry.
The Brazilian commander, Gaston d'Orléans, ordered a final attack. This broke the last Paraguayan lines. General Caballero, the Paraguayan commander, then ordered his remaining 3,000 troops to leave the battlefield.
