The Evergreen post office first opened way back in 1876. The town got its name because of all the beautiful evergreen trees that grow around it. These trees stay green all year long!

Where is Evergreen? Geography and Climate

Evergreen is nestled high up in the Rocky Mountains. It sits at an elevation of about 2,184 meters (7,165 feet) above sea level. That's pretty high! It's located about 30 kilometers (19 miles) west of Denver.

The Evergreen CDP covers an area of about 30 square kilometers (11.6 square miles). A small part of this area, about 0.213 square kilometers (0.082 square miles), is water. Most of this water is the lovely Evergreen Reservoir.

Getting Around: Transportation in Evergreen

Two main roads help people get around Evergreen: State Highway 74 and County Highway 73.

  • Highway 74 travels south from Interstate 70. It goes through Bergen Park and northern Evergreen. Then it turns east and follows Bear Creek Canyon.
  • Highway 73 runs south from downtown Evergreen. It connects to U.S. Highway 285 in Conifer.

You can also use public transportation in Evergreen. The Denver Regional Transportation District offers bus service. Regional bus routes E and Z can take you to downtown Denver. There's also a "call-n-Ride" service for curb-to-curb transportation within the town.

One of the most popular spots is Evergreen Lake. This lake was made in 1927 by building a dam on Bear Creek. It's a great place for recreation and sits just above downtown Evergreen. Downtown Evergreen has a mix of old buildings and local shops.

In winter, Evergreen Lake becomes a giant ice-skating rink! The skating season usually starts around Christmas and lasts until late March. This depends on how thick the ice is and the weather. Evergreen Lake also hosts fun events like the annual Skate the Lake celebration on New Year's Eve. The Evergreen Pond Hockey Championship usually happens there in early January.
