Ex Coelis Mountain is a tall mountain in the Canadian Rockies in Alberta, Canada. It stands about 2,545 meters (8,350 feet) high and has five different peaks. You can find it in the valley of the North Saskatchewan River, south of Abraham Lake. It's also close to the edge of Banff National Park.
If you drive on the David Thompson Highway near Saskatchewan Crossing, you can see this mountain. The mountain is made of sedimentary rock. This rock formed over millions of years and was later pushed up to create the mountain. Its nearest higher peak is Hatter Peak, which is about 8 kilometers (5 miles) to the southeast.

Mountain's Name and History
This mountain has an interesting history behind its name.
Early Name: Kadoona Mountain
In 1911, a explorer named Mary Schäffer first called this mountain "Kadoona Mountain." This name came from the Stoney people's words Kedonnaha Tinda, which means "Meadow of the Winds." Today, that area is known as the Kootenay Plains.
New Name: Ex Coelis Mountain
The mountain's official name, Ex Coelis Mountain, was chosen in 1994. It was named to honor the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion. Their motto is Ex Coelis, which is Latin for "Out of the Clouds."
Naming the Five Peaks
In 1997, each of the five peaks of Ex Coelis Mountain got its own special name.
- Normandy Peak, Ardennes Peak, and Rhine Peak were named after important battles in World War II where the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion fought.
- Elbe Peak was named for a river where the battalion met the Russian Army during the war.
- Stan Waters Peak was named after Stanley Waters, who was a member of the battalion.
