History of Fabius
The land where Fabius is now was once part of the Central New York Military Tract. This land was given to soldiers who fought in the American Revolution as payment.
How Fabius Was Formed
The town of Fabius was created in 1798. It was formed from a larger area called Pompey. Fabius was one of the first towns set up in the Military Tract back in 1790. It was named after a famous Roman general, Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus.
Over time, Fabius lost some of its land. This happened when new towns were created nearby. For example, parts of Fabius became the towns of Tully in 1806 and Truxton in 1808. Truxton later became part of Cortland County.
