History of Fairport Harbor
Fairport Harbor was a great place for a settlement because of its location at the mouth of the Grand River. In 1796 and 1797, the Connecticut Land Company claimed this area as part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. A town called Grandon was planned here on May 16, 1812.
When the town officially became a village in 1836, its name changed to "Fairport." This name meant it was a good or "fair" port. The village got its current name, Fairport Harbor, in 1959.
The village's port grew a lot after the U.S. government helped fund it. Many people from other countries came to live here, especially Finns, Hungarians, and Slovaks. The port was also important for bringing in iron ore, which was used in nearby steel factories. The port still operates today, but not as much as it used to.
Later, a company called Diamond Alkali operated in the village from 1912 to 1976. In recent years, Fairport Harbor has hosted fun events like the Lake County Perch Fest. It also opened the Finnish Heritage Museum, which shares the stories of the Finnish community.
On January 24, 2011, there was an incident involving a natural gas pipeline. This caused some devices in homes to explode, leading to fires and a large evacuation. No one was hurt during this event, but the damage cost about $1.2 million.
