Farah Khan was born on January 9, 1965. Her father, Kamran Khan (film producer), was a stuntman who later became a filmmaker. Her mother, Menaka Irani, is the sister of former child actors Honey Irani and Daisy Irani. This means Farah is a cousin to film personalities Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar. She also has a brother, Sajid Khan, who is a comedian, actor, and film director.

Farah Khan married Shirish Kunder on December 9, 2004. Shirish was the editor of her film Main Hoon Na. They have worked together on several films since then. In 2008, Farah gave birth to triplets: one son and two daughters.

Career in Choreography

When Farah Khan was studying sociology at St. Xavier's College, she saw Michael Jackson's "Thriller" music video. She was so inspired that she decided to become a dancer, even though she hadn't danced much before. She taught herself to dance and started her own dance group.

Her big break came when she took over as choreographer for the film Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992). After this, she created many famous dance numbers. She met actor Shahrukh Khan while working on Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1994). They became good friends and have worked together on many projects. Farah has won seven Filmfare Awards for her amazing dance moves.

In 2013, she choreographed "Jumping Jhapak," the official song for the 2013 Indian Premier League. Farah has also worked on international projects. She choreographed for Monsoon Wedding (2001) and Bombay Dreams (2002). She even helped Colombian pop star Shakira with a Bollywood dance for her song "Hips Don't Lie" in 2006. She also choreographed for Kylie Minogue in the 2009 film Blue.

Directing Films

First Films and Success (2004–2007)

In 2004, Farah Khan became a film director with Main Hoon Na. This film starred Shahrukh Khan and Sushmita Sen. It was a big hit and was the second highest-grossing Indian film of that year. This film earned Farah her first nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Director. She was only the second female director to get this nomination.

Her next film was Om Shanti Om (2007). It also starred Shahrukh Khan and introduced Deepika Padukone. This movie was a huge success. It became the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2007. It was also the highest-grossing Indian film ever at that time. Farah received her second nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Director for this film. This made her the first female director to be nominated twice.

Later Films and Acting (2010–Present)

Her next film as a director was the comedy Tees Maar Khan (2010). It starred Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif. Even though there was a lot of excitement for the film, it didn't do as well as expected. However, Katrina Kaif's dance number "Sheila Ki Jawani", choreographed by Farah, became very popular.

Farah then tried acting in the romantic comedy Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi (2012). She starred alongside Boman Irani. The film received mixed reviews and was not a big success.

Her most recent film as a director is the dance-heist comedy Happy New Year (2014). She reunited with Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone for this movie. The film received mixed reviews but was the second highest-grossing Indian film of 2014.
