Fatih Terim (born 4 September 1953) is a famous Turkish football manager and former player. He is currently the head coach for the Saudi Pro League club Al-Shabab.
During his playing career, he was a defender for teams like Adana Demirspor and Galatasaray. He also played for the Turkish national team.
After retiring as a player, Terim became a highly successful manager. He led Galatasaray to win the UEFA Cup in 2000. He also managed famous Italian clubs like Fiorentina and Milan. He has coached the Turkish national team multiple times, leading them to the semi-finals of UEFA Euro 2008.
People often call him "İmparator" in Turkish or "Imperatore" in Italian. Both nicknames mean "emperor," showing how respected he is in the football world.
Playing Football
Fatih Terim started his professional football journey in 1969 with Adana Demirspor. He quickly became a key player and was named team captain after three years. His strong performances helped Adana Demirspor win the 2nd League championship in the 1972–73 season.
In 1974, Terim joined Galatasaray as a sweeper. He played for the Istanbul club for eleven years. During his time there, Galatasaray won several domestic cups, including the Prime Minister's Cup and the Turkish Cup.
Terim also played for the Turkish national team 51 times between 1974 and 1985. He was the national team captain for 35 international matches, which was a record at the time. He retired from playing football in 1985.
Becoming a Manager
After finishing his playing career, Fatih Terim began coaching. His first coaching jobs were with Ankaragücü and Göztepe. He then became an assistant coach for the Turkish national team in 1990.
In 1993, he took over as the head coach of the Turkey under-21 team. Later that year, he became the manager of the senior Turkish national team. Under his leadership, Turkey qualified for the European Football Championship in 1996. This was the first time in history that Turkey had reached the final tournament, which was a huge achievement for Turkish football.
First Time at Galatasaray
After Euro 1996, Terim became the manager of Galatasaray. He brought in talented international players like Gica Hagi and Gica Popescu. Under his guidance, Galatasaray achieved amazing success.
They won the Turkish league championship for four years in a row. The biggest achievement was winning the UEFA Cup in 2000. This made Terim the most successful Galatasaray manager ever.
Coaching in Italy
After his success with Galatasaray, Terim moved to Italy. He signed with Fiorentina in 2000. Fans loved his attacking style of football. He led Fiorentina to the final of the Coppa Italia.
In 2001, he joined Milan, another big Italian club. He tried to bring his attacking style to Milan, but he left after five months.
Returning to Galatasaray
Terim returned to Galatasaray for his second time in 2002. He aimed to bring more success to the club. The team started strong but faced challenges, including a big loss to their rival Fenerbahçe. Galatasaray finished second in the league that season. He left Galatasaray in 2004.
Second Time with Turkey
In 2005, Terim became the manager of the Turkish national team again. He led them through the qualifiers for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Although they didn't qualify, they played well.
His biggest success in this period was leading Turkey to the semi-finals of UEFA Euro 2008. The team showed incredible fighting spirit, often scoring late goals to win matches. This performance made him very popular. He resigned from the national team in 2009.
Third Time at Galatasaray
In 2011, Fatih Terim returned to Galatasaray for his third time. He quickly brought success back to the club. In the 2011–12 season, Galatasaray won its 18th league title.
The next season, 2012–13, was also very successful. Galatasaray won its 19th league title. They also had a great run in the UEFA Champions League, reaching the quarter-finals. They beat teams like Schalke 04 and played against Real Madrid. Terim left Galatasaray in September 2013.
Third Time with Turkey
Shortly after leaving Galatasaray, Terim was appointed interim manager of the Turkish national team for a third time in August 2013. He managed the team through the 2014 World Cup qualifiers. Turkey did not qualify for the World Cup.
He continued to manage Turkey for the Euro 2016 qualifiers. Turkey qualified for the tournament, showing strong performances in their final matches. He left the national team in 2017.
Fourth Time at Galatasaray
On 22 December 2017, Terim became the manager of Galatasaray for the fourth time. He continued his winning ways, leading Galatasaray to win the Süper Lig in the 2017–18 season. This was his seventh league title with the club.
In the 2018–19 season, Galatasaray won the league again, making it his eighth title and second in a row. He also won the Turkish Cup in 2019. He signed a new contract, showing his long-term commitment to the club. However, after some difficult results, he left Galatasaray in January 2022.
Recent Coaching Roles
In December 2023, Terim took on a new challenge, signing with Greek club Panathinaikos. He managed the team for a few months before leaving in May 2024.
Currently, Fatih Terim is the head coach of the Saudi Arabian club Al Shabab, having joined them in December 2024.

Fatih Terim was born in Adana, Turkey. His father, Talat, came from Cyprus. Fatih Terim is married to Fulya Terim, and they have two daughters named Merve and Buse.
