A Look Back in Time: History of Ferny Grove

How Ferny Grove Got Its Name

This area was first called Ferny Flats. This was because of all the ferns growing here. The name Ferny Grove came from the railway station. This happened in 1916 to avoid confusion with another place called Ferny Flats in New South Wales.

Early Schools and Railways

  • The first school, Kedron Upper Provisional School, opened on August 16, 1875.
  • It became Kedron Upper State School in 1909.
  • In 1940, its name changed to Ferny Grove State School.
  • The railway line to Dayboro was built through the area.
  • The Ferny Grove railway station opened around 1918.

From Forests to Homes

Before the Second World War, Ferny Grove was known for its beautiful picnic spots. These were along Kedron Brook. There were also large areas of forests and valleys full of ferns. One of these ferny areas gave the suburb its name.

Later, Ferny Grove became more industrial. It had a big claypit and a factory that made tiles. This factory was south of the railway station. When it closed in the 1960s, the area was redeveloped. Many new houses were built.

For a while, the Brisbane City Council used an area near Cedar Creek for waste disposal. This site closed in the late 1960s.

The Tramway Museum

The Brisbane Tramway Museum opened in June 1980. It was started by a group in 1968. They wanted to save Brisbane's old tram system. The museum is located on the site of the former waste disposal area. It's a fun place to visit and see old trams!

Modern Transport and Development

On November 17, 1979, the railway line from Ferny Grove to Keperra was updated with electricity. Today, the Ferny Grove railway station is the end of the railway line. Many bus routes also serve the area.

The area south of the old waste disposal site was used as a large rubbish tip until the late 1980s. The original ferny grove that gave the suburb its name is now gone. It was buried under a large hill. On this hill, the City Council now has a waste transfer station and sports fields.
