Exploring Keperra's Landscape

Keperra has a railway line that connects it to nearby areas like Grovely and Mitchelton. This railway line was made bigger in 2008 to help more trains run smoothly. Grovely is actually a small part of Keperra. You'll also find the Brisbane Institute of Tertiary and Further Education (TAFE) Grovely Campus here, which is a college for learning practical skills. The Arana Leagues Club, a popular community spot, is also located in Keperra.

Keperra's Past: A Journey Through Time

Keperra has a very old and interesting history, especially with the Indigenous people. The name Keperra comes from the Yuggera language. It means "young man." Long ago, there were two special places called bora rings in the suburb. These rings were used for important ceremonies where young men would become adults. One ring was near Samford Road and Keperra Street, but it's now covered by houses. The other disappeared when the Keperra Country Club was built.

Early Settlers and Community Life

In 1865, a man named Thomas Price sold a large piece of land in Keperra to John and Mary Nicholson. They built a home and named it Groveley Lodge. Since there wasn't a church nearby, the Nicholsons held church services right in their home. Later, they helped build St Matthews Anglican Church, Grovely in what is now Mitchelton. John and Mary Nicholson are buried in the churchyard cemetery.

The Arrival of the Railway

The railway line was built through the area in 1918. At first, it was just a small stop near the Keperra Country Club. The official Keperra railway station was named in 1932. In October 1918, many blocks of land near the Grovely Railway Station were sold, which helped the area grow.

Golf and Military History

The Keperra Golf Club was started in 1931 by Captain Robert H Cottam. It was first called the Enoggera Golf Club but changed its name to Keperra Golf Club in 1940. The clubhouse was built in 1939–1940. Around 1940, a military camp was set up in Keperra. The army built many of the roads, and much of the land was later used for building homes in 1951.

Drive-in Movies and New Homes

From 1966 to 1998, Keperra had a fun drive-in movie theater where people could watch films from their cars. It could hold 650 cars and later had two screens. Today, that land is a housing area called Kings Grove, part of the Kings Park Estate.
