First Epistle to Timothy facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The First Epistle to Timothy is a book in the Christian Bible. It's the fifteenth book in the New Testament.

This book is thought to be a letter from Paul to a young church leader named Timothy. It's one of three letters in the New Testament called the Pastoral Epistles. The other two are Second Timothy and Titus. They are called "pastoral" because they were sent to people who were pastors, or leaders, of Christian churches. Timothy was a pastor in a city called Ephesus. The letter gives advice on how churches should be organized and how their leaders should act. It also tells them to stay true to the Christian message, even when there were many false ideas around.

Who Was Timothy?

Paul was a mentor to Timothy for many years. A mentor is someone who guides and teaches a younger, less experienced person. We first learn about Timothy in the Book of Acts, chapter 16. His mother, Eunice, and his grandmother, Lois, are mentioned in the Second Epistle to Timothy. We know his father was Greek, not Jewish.

Timothy first met Paul during Paul's second visit to Lystra, a city in Asia Minor. Paul not only helped Timothy become a Christian, but he also became Timothy’s main teacher in Christian leadership. They worked together, preaching and starting new churches. Timothy received his authority to preach directly from Paul, who was a well-known apostle.

What's in the Letter?

The letter talks about several important things. It discusses how to use The Law and warns against false teachings. It also gives instructions for prayer.

The letter explains the qualities needed for church leaders. It also talks about how different groups in the church should be treated, like older members, younger members, and widows.
