History of Fisherman's Friend

How Fisherman's Friend Started

Fisherman's Friend lozenges were first made in 1865. A pharmacist named James Lofthouse created them. He wanted to help fishermen with their breathing problems. These fishermen worked in very cold and harsh conditions at sea.

Originally, it was a strong liquid medicine. It contained menthol and eucalyptus oil. Later, Lofthouse made the liquid into small lozenges. These were much easier for fishermen to carry and use. The fishermen started calling the lozenges their "friends." This is how the name "Fisherman's Friend" came to be.

Growing the Company

The company grew a lot after 1963. This was when Doreen and Tony Lofthouse got married. Tony was a grandson of the founder. Doreen became a director of the company. They changed how the lozenges were sold. Instead of direct sales, they started selling them in shops.

The lozenges then began to spread to other countries. Norway was the first international market in 1974. New flavors were added over time. This helped to appeal to people in different regions. The shape of the lozenges is said to be based on buttons. These buttons were on a dress worn by Mrs. Lofthouse.

Famous Users

Some important people have used Fisherman's Friend. British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher reportedly used them. She used them when her throat got sore from speaking a lot. French President Emmanuel Macron also uses them. He keeps them in his pockets and car. When speaking publicly, he needs water, lemon, and a small dish of Fisherman's.

Packaging and Awards

The lozenges themselves have not changed much since they were first made. The original paper packets are now foil-lined. They are also packaged in a cardboard box.

Lofthouse of Fleetwood has won special awards. They received the Queen's Award to Industry for Export Achievement three times. This award celebrates companies that are successful in selling their products abroad.
