Flutie Flakes is a special brand of frosted corn flakes breakfast cereal. It was named after a famous American football player, Doug Flutie. He was a talented quarterback, which is the player who leads the team's offense.
The cereal was first made in 1998. At that time, Doug Flutie was the starting quarterback for the Buffalo Bills. He became very popular because of his exciting plays and impressive wins.

Why Flutie Flakes Were Made
A big part of the money earned from selling Flutie Flakes went to a special charity. This charity is called the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism. It was created to honor Doug Flutie's son, who has Autism. Autism is a condition that affects how a person communicates and interacts with others.
The foundation's main goals are to help people understand autism better. They also work to find ways to help those with autism.
How the Cereal Became Popular
A company called PLB Sports and Entertainment helped create and sell Flutie Flakes. They handled everything from making the product to designing the boxes. The cereal was first made by Jasper Foods.
PLB Sports originally planned to make only 50,000 boxes. But Flutie Flakes became incredibly popular! They ended up selling more than 3 million boxes. In December 1998, the millionth box was sold online for over $1,400.
Flutie Flakes stayed popular in the Buffalo area. This was true even after Doug Flutie was replaced by another player, Rob Johnson.
Different Flutie Flakes Boxes
Over time, four different box designs for Flutie Flakes were released. Each one showed Doug Flutie in a different way.
First and Second Editions
The very first box was red. It showed two pictures of Doug Flutie wearing his blue Buffalo Bills uniform.
The second box came out in 1999. This one was blue and featured a picture of Flutie in a red jersey. This jersey was similar to what quarterbacks wear for practice.
Third and Fourth Editions
The third box was released in 2000. It was white, blue, and red. This design showed Flutie in a white Bills uniform.
In 2001, Doug Flutie joined the San Diego Chargers. The third edition box was then changed to match the Chargers' team colors. It had a navy, yellow, and white design. This 2001 box also said "Super-Charged" above the Flutie Flakes logo. This replaced the "Collector's Box" text from the earlier Buffalo editions.
Anniversary Editions
Flutie Flakes were brought back for a short time in 2008. This was to celebrate the cereal's 10-year anniversary. Another special version was released in December 2019 for the 20th anniversary.
Other Fun Products
Besides the cereal, there were other Flutie-themed products for fans.
Flutie Flakes Chocolate Bars
In 1998 and 1999, Flutie Flakes Chocolate Bars were also available. These candy bars had Flutie Flakes cereal mixed into milk chocolate. When Doug Flutie was chosen for the 1999 Pro Bowl, a special collector's edition of the chocolate bar was made. It had a new color design to celebrate this achievement.
Flutie Fruities
Flutie Fruities were a brand of fruit snacks. They were created in 2001 when Doug Flutie was playing for the Chargers.
Fan Merchandise
Every box of Flutie Flakes came with special offers on the back. Fans could send away for cool items. These included t-shirts, teddy bears, footballs, and even baseball caps. There were also CDs featuring music from Doug Flutie's own band, The Flutie Gang.
Doug Flutie also played in the CFL for teams like the BC Lions, Calgary Stampeders, and Toronto Argonauts. He even won three Grey Cup championships there. However, none of the Flutie Flakes products ever showed him in his CFL uniforms.
PLB Sports, the company behind Flutie Flakes, has also created cereals for other famous people. Most of these are football players like Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes. Flutie Flakes has been their longest-running product. The company's founder has thanked the fans of the Bills Mafia for helping his company succeed.
