Fontanelle is a small city located in Adair County, Iowa, in the United States. It is part of Summerset Township, Adair County, Iowa. In 2020, about 676 people lived there.

History of Fontanelle

Fontanelle was first planned out in 1855. A man named James C. Gibbs, who was from New York state, was the one who started the city. He bought land and built a large log cabin. He even ran a hotel out of his cabin for a short time. James C. Gibbs passed away in 1907 and is buried in the Fontanelle Cemetery.

Another early settler was D. M. Valentine. He bought land right next to Gibbs' property.

The city got its name from Chief Logan Fontanelle. He was an important leader of the Omaha tribe. His father was a French fur trader.

Geography and Landscape

Fontanelle covers a total area of about 0.96 square miles (2.22 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

The land around Fontanelle is mostly rolling hills. There are also some small valleys, called ravines, near the streams. The east branch of the Nodaway River flows into Fontanelle from the northwest part of the city.

In 2020, there were 676 people living in Fontanelle. There were 268 households and 157 families. The city had about 789 people per square mile.

Most people in Fontanelle were White (93.9%). A small number were Black or African American (1.0%), Native American (0.7%), or Asian (0.4%). About 3.8% of people were from two or more races. Less than 1% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.

Students in Fontanelle attend schools in the Nodaway Valley Community School District. This school district was created in 2000. It joined together the schools from Greenfield and Bridgewater–Fontanelle. Students go to Nodaway Valley High School for their high school education.

Fontanelle has its own newspaper called The Fontanelle Observer. You can find a page for it on the website of the Creston News Advertiser. The newspaper office is located on 5th Street in Fontanelle.

In the past, there were other newspapers in the city. These included The Fontanelle Register, which started in 1862, and The Fontanelle Reporter, which began in 1879.

There are two churches in Fontanelle. One is a United Methodist church. The other is an Emmanuel Lutheran church, which was started in 1874.
