Music and Early Life
When Freddy Lim was a student, he learned from textbooks that focused on China. Because of this, he first supported Taiwan becoming part of China. Later, he started to feel more connected to his Taiwanese identity.
He started his band, Chthonic, in 1995. This was during his second year at university. In Taiwan, many people just call him Freddy. He chose this name because he liked the character Freddy Krueger.
On stage, Freddy Lim used to wear special face paint. This paint looked like the Ba-Jia-Jiang, who are traditional Taiwanese religious performers. He stopped using the face paint in 2011.
With his wife, Doris Yeh, who is also in Chthonic, Freddy Lim started the Taiwan Rock Alliance. They also helped create two music festivals: Formoz and Megaport. These festivals were cancelled in 2014 because of a business disagreement. But they came back the next year, organized by the Taiwan Rock Alliance.
Since 2000, the Taiwan Rock Alliance has also held a special concert. It used to be called "Say No to China." Later, it was called "Say Yes to Taiwan." Now, it is known as "Spirit of Taiwan." This concert happens around the anniversary of the February 28 incident.
Freddy Lim was chosen to lead Amnesty International Taiwan in 2010. He left this role in 2014.
In 2018, Chthonic was supposed to play at a music festival in Hong Kong. But Freddy Lim could not get a visa to enter Hong Kong. So, the band could not perform. Hong Kong officials said he did not have special skills that were needed there.
In 2020, Freddy Lim started an English podcast called "Metalhead Politics." He wanted to share information about Taiwan's political issues with people around the world. He said it was important for everyone to know what was happening in Taiwan.
Getting Involved in Politics
In January 2015, Freddy Lim helped create the New Power Party. The next month, he announced he would run in the 2016 elections. He wanted to become a member of the Legislative Yuan.
He first planned to run in the Daan District. But then he decided to run in the Zhongzheng–Wanhua area instead. The Democratic Progressive Party supported him in this election. He won the election on 16 January 2016. He beat the person who was already in office, Lin Yu-fang.
After he became a member of parliament, Freddy Lim joined the Foreign and National Defense Committee. In October, he announced a new group in parliament to support Tibet. He became the leader of this group.
Important Political Moments
In October 2018, Freddy Lim asked the military to look into old records. He wanted them to apologize to the families of victims from the 1987 Lieyu massacre. This event happened during a time when Taiwan was under martial law. The Ministry of National Defense said it was too hard to find the victims after so much time.
In August 2019, Freddy Lim announced he was leaving the New Power Party. He said he would support Tsai Ing-wen in the 2020 Taiwan presidential election. He also decided to run for parliament again as an independent candidate. In January 2020, he won his re-election. He beat Lin Yu-fang for the second time.
In August 2021, a group tried to remove Freddy Lim from his position. They collected enough signatures to start a recall election. A recall election is when people vote to decide if an elected official should keep their job. This election happened on 9 January 2022. People who wanted to recall him criticized how he handled the COVID-19 pandemic in his area. More people voted to recall him than to keep him. However, not enough people voted in total for the result to count. So, Freddy Lim kept his job.
