Freimettigen is a small town, also called a municipality, in Switzerland. It is located in the Bern-Mittelland area within the canton of Bern. It's a quiet place where many people live and work.

History of Freimettigen

Freimettigen was first written about in the year 1282. Back then, its name was Vrimuotingen.

The oldest signs of people living here are some Bronze Age jewelry. These ancient treasures were found in 1910. In the Middle Ages, Freimettigen was part of a local lordship called Hünigen. During the 1200s and 1300s, two important places, Interlaken Monastery and Fraubrunnen Abbey, bought land in the village. Later, in 1528, the city of Bern took over these lands. This happened when Bern changed the monasteries into non-religious places.

Freimettigen has always been part of the church area of Oberdiessbach. For a long time, the village has been mostly a farming area. Many people here are still dairy farmers. A railway station connects Freimettigen to bigger cities like Burgdorf and Thun. This makes it easy for people to travel for work, especially to Bern or Thun.

Freimettigen covers an area of about 2.2 square kilometers (0.85 square miles). A large part of this land, about 63.7%, is used for farming. This includes fields for crops and pastures for animals. Forests cover about 29.8% of the area. The rest, about 5.8%, has buildings and roads.

The town is built on the north-west side of a hill called Kurzenberg. Part of it also lies in the Kiesen Valley. Freimettigen includes the main village, a smaller settlement called Dessikofen, and many scattered farmhouses. A "hamlet" is a very small village, even smaller than a regular village.

In 2010, Freimettigen became part of a new administrative area. This new area is called Verwaltungskreis Bern-Mittelland.
