Fremont is a town located in Sullivan County, New York, in the United States. It's found in the northwestern part of the county. In 2020, about 1,161 people lived there.

History of Fremont

The town of Fremont was created in 1851. It was formed from a part of the Town of Callicoon. The first settlers arrived around 1780. Back then, there were no roads, so people traveled by using the Delaware River.

Long Eddy's Past

The small community of Long Eddy was once known as Douglas City. It was the first and only city in Sullivan County. Today, Long Eddy is home to the Basket Historical Society. It also has the Long Eddy Hotel & Saloon, which is the oldest continuously run business in Sullivan County.

Geography and Climate

Fremont is located where the northwestern town line meets Delaware County. The southwestern town line is the border with Pennsylvania, specifically Wayne County. The Delaware River marks this border.

Landscape and Weather

Fremont's climate is typical for the northeastern United States. The area has hills that are about 2,000 feet high. Valleys are usually under 1,000 feet. Most of the town is covered by forests, with some open fields scattered around.

Summer weather is generally cool. Temperatures rarely reach 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius). Daytime temperatures average between 70 and 79 degrees Fahrenheit (21-26 degrees Celsius). Nights are cooler, around 60 degrees Fahrenheit (15 degrees Celsius).

Communities and Locations in Fremont

Fremont is made up of several small communities and areas:

  • Acidalia – A small community located near the northwestern border of the town.
  • Basket – A community in the western part of the town, found east of Long Eddy.
  • Buck Brook – An area located in the eastern part of the town.
  • Fernwood – A community in the western part of the town, close to the northern border.
  • Fremont Center – A community west of the town center. It is located along County Routes 93, 94, and 95.
  • Hankins – A community believed to be where the first settlers arrived. Hankins is near the Delaware River in the western part of the town on Route 97. Important historical places here include the Hankins District No. One Schoolhouse, Hankins Stone Arch Bridge, and Anthony Manny House. These are all listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Lakewood – A community in the northeastern part of the town.
  • Long Eddy – A community in the far western part of the town, right by the Delaware River. The Riverside Cemetery in Long Eddy was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.
  • Mileses – A community in the western part of the town, west of Fremont Center.
  • Obernburg – A community in the northeastern part of the town along Route 95. It is home to St. Mary's Church, which is the oldest church in Sullivan County. The community was named after Obernburg, Germany.
  • Pleasant Valley – A community located in the southern part of the town.
  • Tennanah Lake (formerly Long Pond) – A community in the northeastern part of the town. It is located by a lake also called Tennanah Lake.
