Muhammad Fuad Masum (born 1 January 1938) is an important Iraqi politician. He served as the seventh president of Iraq from 2014 to 2018. He is a Kurdish politician. He was chosen as president after the 2014 election. Masum was the second non-Arab president of Iraq. He followed Jalal Talabani, who was also Kurdish.

Early Life and Learning
Fuad Masum was born in a city called Koya. His father, Mullah Masum Khider, was a leader of Muslim scholars in Kurdistan. Fuad's family has a long history in politics and religion. They come from a village called Khabanen.
He went to religious schools in Iraqi Kurdistan until he was 18. He studied law and Sharia (Islamic law) at Baghdad University. In 1958, Masum went to Cairo to study at Al-Azhar University. He became a professor at Basrah University in 1968. In 1975, he earned his PhD in Islamic philosophy from Al-Azhar.
Political Journey
Joining the Communist Party
Masum first joined the Iraqi Communist Party in 1962. He stayed with them until 1964. He then traveled to Syria to meet the Syrian Communist Party leader. After learning that the leader had views against the Kurds, Masum left the party. He then joined the Kurdistan Democratic Party (PDK).
With the Kurdistan Democratic Party
In 1968, Masum became the PDK representative in Basra. He also represented the Kurdish Revolution in Cairo until 1975.
Founding the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan
Masum helped start the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) in 1976. In 1992, he became the first Prime Minister of Kurdistan Region. After the 2003 invasion of Iraq, Masum returned to Baghdad. He was part of the group representing Kurdistan. He also helped write the new constitution. In 2010, Masum became the first Speaker of the Council of Representatives.
Becoming President

In 2014, the Iraqi parliament chose him as the seventh president of Iraq. Masum received 211 votes. His closest opponent, Barham Salih, received 17 votes. Traditionally, a Kurd holds the presidency to keep political balance.
After becoming president, Masum had many big challenges. These included security, political, and economic issues. On August 26, he appointed Haider al-Abadi as the new prime minister.
Family Life
Masum married Rounak Abdulwahid Mustafa in 1968. She passed away in 2023. They had five daughters: Shireen (born 1969), Juwan (born 1972), Zozan (born 1977), Shilan (born 1979), and Veyan (born 1984). They also had a son, Showan (1974–1988), who died from a childhood illness.
