Early Life and Education
Fuad Masum was born in a city called Koya. His father, Mullah Masum Khider, was a leader of Muslim scholars in Iraqi Kurdistan. His family had a history of being involved in politics and religious leadership.
He went to different religious schools in Iraqi Kurdistan until he was 18. Later, he studied law and Sharia (Islamic law) at Baghdad University. In 1958, Masum traveled to Cairo, Egypt, to continue his studies at Al-Azhar University.
He worked as a professor at Basrah University starting in 1968. In 1975, he earned his PhD in Islamic philosophy from Al-Azhar University.
Political Journey

Joining Political Parties
Fuad Masum first joined the Iraqi Communist Party in 1962. He stayed with them until 1964. He then went to Syria to meet the Communist Party secretary there. After learning about the secretary's views against the Kurds, Masum left the party.
He then joined the Kurdistan Democratic Party (PDK). In 1968, he became the PDK's representative in Basra. He also represented the Kurdish Revolution in Cairo until 1975.
Founding the PUK
In 1976, Masum helped create the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). By 1992, he became the first Prime Minister of Kurdistan Region.
After the 2003 invasion of Iraq, Masum went back to Baghdad. He was part of the group representing Kurdistan. He also helped write the new constitution for Iraq. In 2010, Masum became the first Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament.
Becoming President

In 2014, the Iraqi parliament members elected him as the seventh president of Iraq. Masum received 211 votes. His closest opponent, Barham Salih, received 17 votes. The decision was made by Kurdish members of parliament. Traditionally, a Kurd holds the presidency to keep political balance.
When he became president, Masum recognized the "huge security, political and economic tasks" he would face. On August 26, 2014, Masum appointed Haider al-Abadi as the new prime minister.
