Gabriel Eduardo Saporta, born on October 11, 1979, is an American musician and a business person. From 2005 to 2015, he was the lead singer and founder of the electropop band Cobra Starship. On November 10, 2015, after almost ten years and two top 10 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, Saporta announced that the band would stop making music. He decided to focus on helping other musicians through his new company, The Artist Group. Before Cobra Starship, Saporta was the lead singer, bassist, and songwriter for the punk band Midtown.

Early Life and Music Passion

Gabe Saporta was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. His family is Jewish. His grandparents and great-grandparents moved from Europe to Uruguay during World War II. When he was four years old, he moved with his parents to New York City.

From a young age, Saporta loved music. It became a way for him to express himself and connect with others. He first enjoyed hip hop, but soon discovered punk rock. He started going to concerts to see bands like Gorilla Biscuits and Fugazi. Soon after, Saporta and his brother Ricky began putting on their own shows and releasing their own music.

Music Career Beginnings

Midtown Band Years (1998–2005)

When he was 16, Saporta joined his first band, Humble Beginnings, as a bass player. While attending Rutgers University, he started the pop punk band Midtown. As the singer, songwriter, and bassist for Midtown, Saporta gained a lot of attention. The band released one EP (Extended Play) and three LP (Long Play) albums. These albums were The Sacrifice of Life, Save the World, Lose the Girl, Living Well Is the Best Revenge, and Forget What You Know.

Midtown faced some legal issues with their first record label after their second album. During this time, Saporta, who was very good at business, wanted to learn about the music industry from a different angle. He started managing a band called Armor for Sleep. As Armor For Sleep became successful, Saporta made a deal to combine his small company with Crush Management. Crush Management also managed Midtown. Later, Crush helped Saporta launch Cobra Starship.

After Midtown broke up, the band gained a strong fan base. Because of this new interest, Midtown reunited for a secret show in Brooklyn. They also headlined the Skate & Surf Festival in Asbury Park, NJ in 2014. In 2022, Midtown announced several shows supporting My Chemical Romance. They also played two of their own shows at the Starland Ballroom.

Cobra Starship (2006–2015)

After Midtown, Gabe Saporta wanted to start a new music project. He wanted it to be more fun and include different electronic sounds. The idea for Cobra Starship came to him during a trip to the Arizona desert in 2005. Saporta created and recorded the first Cobra album by himself with S*A*M & Sluggo.

Cobra Starship got an early boost when Midtown's management helped Saporta record a song for the 2006 movie Snakes on a Plane. This song became a small hit. By 2007, Cobra Starship was a full band and began touring across the country. Cobra's unique sound allowed them to tour with many different artists. These included bands like 30 Seconds to Mars and Fall Out Boy. They also performed with electronic artists such as Girl Talk.

From 2006 to 2014, Cobra Starship released four full albums. They had two songs, "Good Girls Go Bad" and "You Make Me Feel", that sold over two million copies each. Their song "Hot Mess" also sold over 500,000 copies. The song "Good Girls Go Bad" featured guest vocals by Leighton Meester. Saporta later made his acting debut in the TV show Gossip Girl.

In 2012, Cobra Starship was the main opening act for Justin Bieber's entire South American stadium tour.

T∆G // The Artist Group (2015–Present)

On his Beats1 Radio show in November 2015, Gabe Saporta announced he would no longer perform or release new music. Saporta and his business partner Mike Carden started a talent management company called T∆G // The Artist Group. This company began its work in early 2016. Saporta explained that he now wants to work behind the scenes. He wants to help younger artists achieve their dreams.

In 2022, Gabe Saporta joined beatBread's Artist Advocacy Council. This group gives important advice to independent music artists. Saporta joined other music industry experts on this council.

Personal Life

Saporta's father, Diego Saporta, studied medicine and became a doctor in Montevideo. He decided to leave Uruguay with his family in the early 1980s.
