Gallenkirch was once a small town, also called a municipality, in Switzerland. It was located in the Brugg area of the canton of Aargau.

On January 1, 2013, Gallenkirch joined with three other nearby towns: Linn, Oberbözberg, and Unterbözberg. Together, they formed a new, larger town called Bözberg.

History of Gallenkirch

Gallenkirch was first mentioned in old writings in 1338. Back in the Middle Ages (a long time ago!), Gallenkirch was part of a larger area controlled by the city of Bad Säckingen.

The people of Gallenkirch used to belong to the church in Hornussen. They had a small chapel in their village, named after Saint Gall. This chapel is no longer standing today, but parts of it were used in a newer building. After a big change in religion called the Reformation, the village became part of the Bözberg church community.

From 1460 to 1798, the area was ruled by Bern. During this time, Gallenkirch was part of the Thalheim court. In the 1800s and 1900s, there were several tries to combine Gallenkirch with the nearby village of Linn, but they didn't work out.

However, since 1917, children from Gallenkirch have gone to school in Linn. The towns also work together to solve other problems, like sharing services. Today, Gallenkirch doesn't have its own shops or much business. Most people living there are farmers or travel to bigger towns for work.

Where is Gallenkirch?

In 2009, Gallenkirch covered an area of about 1.4 square kilometers (0.54 square miles). A big part of this land, about 74.3%, was used for farming. Forests covered 18.6% of the area. The remaining 7.1% was used for buildings and roads.

Most of the built-up area was for houses and other buildings (3.6%), and roads (3.6%). Nearly 18% of the land was covered by thick forests. For farming, over half of the land (52.9%) was used for growing crops. About 17.9% was for pastures where animals graze, and 3.6% was for fruit trees or vineyards.

Gallenkirch is located west of a mountain pass where the modern Bözbergstrasse road runs. It is about 5 kilometers (3 miles) away from downtown Brugg, which is the main town of the district. Gallenkirch shares its borders with Unterbözberg to the northeast, Linn to the south, and Effingen to the northeast.

Gallenkirch's Coat of Arms

The blazon (description) of Gallenkirch's coat of arms is: Per pale Or a Trunk couped ragully proper and Azure a Latin Cross patte couped Or.

This means the shield is split down the middle. On one side, there's a gold background with a rough, cut tree trunk. This tree trunk represents Saint Gall, who, according to old stories, carried a wooden staff. On the other side, there's a blue background with a gold cross. This cross stands for the Gallus Chapel, which is where the village got its name.
