A Look at Galveston Island's Past

Galveston Island is a barrier island. This means it's a long, narrow island that protects the mainland from ocean storms. It sits between Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The island started forming about 5,000 years ago. It took another 3,000 years for it to become high enough to withstand big storms. Native American groups began visiting Galveston Island around 2,000 years ago.

Early European Visitors

In the 1500s, Spanish explorers arrived. They met the native Akokisa and Karankawa peoples. It's thought that Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca and his crew were shipwrecked here in 1520. They eventually traveled from the island to what was then called New Spain (now Mexico).

Later, in 1817, the LaFitte brothers came to the island. They were known for being pirates in the Caribbean. They hoped to create a big city here, like "Manhattan on the Gulf." Trade did well for a while. However, major storms in 1867, 1871, 1875, and 1886 slowed down progress.

The Great Storm of 1900

The 1900 Galveston hurricane was a terrible storm. It hit the island in 1900. This hurricane caused a huge disaster. Between 5,000 and 10,000 people lost their lives. After this storm, a large seawall was built. This wall now protects the northern part of the island from future storms.

How the Park Was Created

The idea to protect this land began in 1950. A man named Maco Stewart Jr. owned over 2,000 acres on the island. In his will, he wanted his "Galveston Island home" to be given to the state of Texas. He wished for it to be used as a "fish, game, and oyster preserve and for any other public purpose."

By the late 1960s, Stewart's family wanted the park to be created. In 1969, the state of Texas bought 1,950 acres from the family. The state park officially opened to the public in 1975.

Protecting the Dunes

Tropical Storm Frances hit the park on September 10, 1998. It destroyed the sand dunes. These dunes are very important. They protect the park's freshwater areas and visitor buildings. A special project helped restore the dunes. They used recycled Christmas trees to trap sand and rebuild the dunes.

The park was closed again on September 14, 2008. This was due to damage from Hurricane Ike. But in July 2009, the park reopened for outdoor fun and camping.
