Gary Stills (born July 11, 1974) is a former American football player. He played as a defensive end for 10 seasons. Most of his career was in the National Football League (NFL). Gary played college football for the West Virginia Mountaineers. The Kansas City Chiefs picked him in the third round of the 1999 NFL draft. He also played for the Baltimore Ravens, St. Louis Rams, and Las Vegas Locomotives.

Growing Up and High School Football

Gary Stills went to Valley Forge Military Academy. As a senior, he was a star player. He made 162 tackles and 7.5 sacks. A tackle is when a player stops an opponent with the ball. A sack is when a defensive player tackles the quarterback before they can throw the ball.

College Football Career

Stills played college football at West Virginia University. He studied sports management there. During his time in college, he made 159 tackles and 26 sacks.

Best College Season

His best year was in 1997, when he was a junior. He made 12 sacks that season. In the first game against Marshall, Gary set a school record. He had 4 sacks in just one game! He finished that year with 67 tackles. He also earned honors for being one of the best players in the Big East.

Professional Football Career

Gary Stills had a long career playing professional football. He was known for being a strong defensive player.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs chose Gary in the third round of the 1999 NFL draft. He was the 75th player picked overall. In his first year, he played in only two games. In 2000, he played 11 games on special teams. Special teams are units that play during kickoffs and punts. He made ten tackles that year.

The next year, in 2001, he had 15 tackles. He also spent some time playing in NFL Europe for the Frankfurt Galaxy. In 2002, he played in all 16 games. He had a career-high 44 tackles and two sacks.

The year 2003 was also great for Gary. He made 38 tackles and a career-high three sacks. Because of his excellent play, he was chosen for his first Pro Bowl. The Pro Bowl is an all-star game for the best players in the NFL. In 2004, he played in 16 games, making 30 tackles and 2.5 sacks. In his last year with the Chiefs, he had 19 tackles. He was famous for his amazing special teams play. He also had a cool celebration where he would "punch the ground" after tackling a returner. The Chiefs later released him.

Baltimore Ravens

Gary Stills joined the Baltimore Ravens before the 2006 season. In his first year with the Ravens, he played in all 16 games. He set a team record with 44 special teams tackles. In 2007, he again played in 16 games. He finished the season with 15 tackles and one sack. The Ravens released him on August 30, 2008.

St. Louis Rams

Just two days after leaving the Ravens, Gary Stills signed with the St. Louis Rams. This happened on September 1, 2008.

Las Vegas Locomotives

Gary was drafted by the Las Vegas Locomotives on June 18, 2009. This team was part of the United Football League (UFL).

Personal Life

Gary Stills has two sons who also played football. His sons, Dante and Darius, both played college football at West Virginia University. Dante is currently a player for the Arizona Cardinals. Darius is a free agent, meaning he is not currently signed to a team.
