Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder (born March 3, 1933 – died August 17, 2015) was an important person in both German politics and European football. People often called him "MV". He was a Vice President of the UEFA, which is the main organisation for football in Europe.
Before his work with UEFA, Mayer-Vorfelder was a politician in Germany. He was part of the CDU political party. He served in the government of the German state of Baden-Württemberg from 1976 to 1998. Later, he became the president of the German football club VfB Stuttgart and then the president of the German Football Association (DFB), which runs football in Germany.
Life and Career
Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder was born in Mannheim, a city in Germany. He went to university in Freiburg and Heidelberg. In 1959, he finished his studies with a law degree.
His Political Work
As a politician from the CDU party, he joined the government of Baden-Württemberg. In 1976, he became a permanent secretary, which is a high-ranking position in the government.
From 1980 to 1991, he was the Minister of Culture and Sports for Baden-Württemberg. This meant he was in charge of things like schools, arts, and sports for the state. After that, from 1991 to 1998, he served as the Minister of Finance. In this role, he managed the state's money and budget. During these years, he was also a member of the Bundesrat, which is like a second parliament for Germany's states.
His Football Leadership
At the same time as his political career, Mayer-Vorfelder also became very involved in the world of football. In 1975, he became the president of VfB Stuttgart, a well-known German football club. He led the club for 25 years, until 2000.
In 2000, he took over from Egidius Braun as the president of the German Football Association (DFB). This is the biggest job in German football. In 2004, he faced a difficult vote, but he managed to keep his position. From 2004 to 2006, he shared the role of DFB president with Theo Zwanziger. Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder passed away on August 17, 2015.
Personal Life
Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder was married to Margit Deutschle. His son, Michael Mayer-Vorfelder, also played football, appearing in three games for VfB Stuttgart. On his FIFA page, Mayer-Vorfelder shared that his favorite football player of all time was the legendary German player Franz Beckenbauer. He also said that his favorite match was the "Miracle of Bern" in 1954, when Germany surprisingly won the World Cup.
