Gilbert is part of the "Quad Cities" area. The other cities in this group are Virginia, Eveleth, and Mountain Iron. The city's name might come from Giles Gilbert, who explored a mine in the 1890s. Another possibility is that it was named after E. A. Gilbert, a businessman from Duluth.
