Gilly is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the Nyon district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland. It's a charming place with a rich history.

History of Gilly
Gilly was first mentioned in old records way back in 1179. At that time, it was known by a slightly different name, de Iusliaco. Later, in 1278, it was called Gillie, which is closer to its name today.
Geography and Land Use
Gilly covers an area of about 7.8 square kilometers (about 3 square miles). A big part of this land, more than half (55%), is used for farming. This means there are lots of fields and vineyards.
About 34.7% of Gilly is covered by forests, which are great for nature and wildlife. The rest of the land is used for buildings, roads, and a small amount of rivers or lakes.
Gilly used to be part of the Rolle District. But in 2006, it became part of the newer Nyon district. The municipality includes the main village of Gilly and a smaller area called Vincy.
Gilly's Coat of Arms
Every town has a special symbol called a coat of arms. Gilly's coat of arms has a design with six silver and red stripes. On top of these stripes, there's a golden V-shape, called a chevron. At the very top, there are three golden seashell shapes on a red background.

Gilly has a population of about 863 people. Over the past ten years, the number of people living in Gilly has grown quite a bit, by about 28.5%. Most of this growth is because people have moved to Gilly from other places.
Most people in Gilly speak French, which is the main language. Some people also speak German or English.
The population of Gilly includes many young people. About 13% are children under 9, and almost 15% are teenagers between 10 and 19. There's a good mix of adults and older people too, making it a diverse community.
Many people in Gilly live in single-family homes. Most of the apartments in the town are lived in all the time, with only a few being used for holidays or being empty.

After that, primary school lasts for four years. Then, students go to lower secondary school for six years. Some students also learn at home or attend other types of schools.
