Gilly is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the Nyon district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland. It's a charming place with a rich history.

History of Gilly

Gilly was first mentioned in old records way back in 1179. At that time, it was known by a slightly different name, de Iusliaco. Later, in 1278, it was called Gillie, which is closer to its name today.

Geography and Land Use

Gilly covers an area of about 7.8 square kilometers (about 3 square miles). A big part of this land, more than half (55%), is used for farming. This means there are lots of fields and vineyards.

About 34.7% of Gilly is covered by forests, which are great for nature and wildlife. The rest of the land is used for buildings, roads, and a small amount of rivers or lakes.

Gilly used to be part of the Rolle District. But in 2006, it became part of the newer Nyon district. The municipality includes the main village of Gilly and a smaller area called Vincy.

Gilly's Coat of Arms

Every town has a special symbol called a coat of arms. Gilly's coat of arms has a design with six silver and red stripes. On top of these stripes, there's a golden V-shape, called a chevron. At the very top, there are three golden seashell shapes on a red background.
