History of Gipf-Oberfrick

Scientists have found signs of very old settlements in the Gipf-Oberfrick area. These include tools from the Bronze Age and graves from the La Tène culture. There were also Roman-era buildings and a farmhouse from the 1st to 4th centuries.

The modern village of Gipf was first mentioned in records in 1259. Oberfrick was mentioned a bit later, in 1288.

Old Castles and Rulers

Above the village, on a hill called Tiersteinberg, stood the Alt-Thierstein castle. Today, it's just a ruin.

For a long time, different groups ruled the village. Before 1232, it belonged to the counts of Homberg-Thierstein. Then, it came under the control of the lords of Frick, who worked for the Habsburg family. In 1406, the Lords of Eptingen took over the village. Later, the city of Basel gained control.

In 1534, the area became part of Austria and the Fricktal district. It stayed under Habsburg rule until 1797.

Becoming a Municipality

Gipf, Oberfrick, and Frick used to be part of one court system. This system allowed them to manage small local issues themselves. The area faced a lot of damage during the Thirty Years War.

In 1803, after a big change in Switzerland, the Fricktal area joined the Swiss Confederation. At that time, the old court area was split into two separate towns: Frick and Gipf-Oberfrick.

Gipf and Frick shared a church until 1953. That's when Gipf-Oberfrick got its own independent church community. A chapel was built in 1708, and a new main church was built between 1968 and 1970.
