A Look Back in Time
Glarus has a long and interesting past. It was first mentioned in old writings way back in 1178. That's over 800 years ago!
Becoming a Capital
In 1419, Glarus became the main town of the Linth valley. This meant it was an important center for the area.
Early Industry
In the 1700s and 1800s, the valley started to change. Factories and industries began to grow here. This was a big step for the region.
Protecting Workers
Glarus made history in 1864. It introduced the first law in Europe to protect workers. This law said that people could not be forced to work more than 12 hours a day. This was a very important step for workers' rights!
Modern Glarus
On January 1, 2011, Glarus grew even bigger. It joined with three other nearby towns: Ennenda, Netstal, and Riedern. This made the municipality of Glarus larger.
