History of Glen Ridge
The first house in what is now Glen Ridge was built in 1932 by the Trout family. Later, in 1935, twin brothers Kenyon and Karl Riddle bought land in the area. This land was located west of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad and south of Southern Boulevard.
Glen Ridge officially became a town on December 11, 1947. It covers about 100 acres. The town got its name from a resident named Helen Mosler. She thought the wooded canal bank looked like a "ridge" in a "glen," which is a narrow valley.
When the town was first formed, residents chose John D. Watts as their mayor. They also elected other leaders called aldermen, a town clerk, and a town manager. In 1950, the first official count of people, called a census, showed that 126 people lived in Glen Ridge.
For many years, town council elections were held in the mayor's garage. Meetings took place in the homes of the council members. This continued until the mid-1990s when the town started renting a small office space. In September 2002, Glen Ridge opened its own town hall and community center. They spent about $110,000 to turn an old house into this new building.
A newspaper article in 2014 mentioned that Glen Ridge had about 100 homes. It also noted that the town did not collect property taxes from its residents. The article described Glen Ridge as a bird sanctuary because of its thick green trees that form a natural roof over the streets.
