Early Life and Sports Achievements

Glenn Pires grew up in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He was a talented athlete in high school. He earned awards in both football and track for three years. In football, he played as an offensive guard and linebacker. He was chosen for several all-star teams after the season.

College Football and Track Success

Pires continued his football career at Springfield College. There, he was recognized as an NCAA Division II All-ECAC and All-New England player for two years. He also excelled in track and field. He was a champion in the shot put and discus events. His discus throw of 170 feet, 9 inches is still a record at New Bedford High. In 1979, he won a national championship in the 35-pound weight hammer throw. Because of his amazing achievements, Glenn Pires was added to the New Bedford High School Hall of Fame in 2002.

Coaching Career Journey

Glenn Pires started his coaching journey at the high school level. His first job was as an assistant coach at Melrose High School. Later, he returned to his old high school in New Bedford. There, he worked as an assistant coach for his former coach, Bruce MacPherson.

Coaching in College Football

After high school, Pires moved on to coach at colleges. He held assistant coaching positions at Syracuse University, Dartmouth College, and Michigan State University. These roles helped him gain valuable experience.

Moving to the NFL

In 1996, Glenn Pires made a big step up to the National Football League (NFL). He joined the Arizona Cardinals as an assistant linebackers coach. He stayed with the Cardinals until 2000. He was proud of his work with player Ronald McKinnon. McKinnon was not drafted by any team, but Pires helped him play in the NFL for ten years.

After his time with the Cardinals, Pires joined the Detroit Lions. He continued to work as an assistant linebackers coach for the Lions.

Coaching the Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons

Pires then moved to the Miami Dolphins for five years. He started as an assistant defensive line coach. Later, he became a defensive quality control coach. In 2007, he became the assistant linebacker coach. After that, he spent seven years with the Atlanta Falcons as their linebacker coach. In 2014, with Pires's help, player Paul Worrilow made 142 tackles. This was the fifth-highest number of tackles in the entire NFL that year.

Time with the Chicago Bears

In 2015, Glenn Pires joined the Chicago Bears. He was excited about the team's history. He said he looked forward to continuing the Bears' strong tradition of great linebackers. He coached the linebackers for the Bears until the end of the 2018 season.

Glenn Pires has family roots in Cape Verde. His maternal grandmother came from the island nation of Cape Verde.
