A Look Back at Glenville's History
Before Glenville officially became a town in 1891, it was known as "Hamburgh" and later "Hamburg." The area has been settled since at least 1827. Back then, it was even used as a fort to protect against attacks from the local Cherokee people.
When Glenville became a town in 1891, it was surprisingly the largest town in Jackson County. It had the first private high school in the county, which started in 1886. This school was similar to Cullowhee High School, which later became Western Carolina University. Glenville's school became a public school in 1891.
In 1926, a new Glenville School was built on a hill above the town. It taught students from first to eleventh grade. This school was the main high school for that part of the county until 1975. That's when Blue Ridge School opened, combining students from Cashiers Elementary and Glenville School.
When Lake Glenville was filled in the 1940s, the water came right up to the edge of the school campus. It was a very special place for the community. Sadly, after it was no longer used, the school building fell apart and was torn down around the year 2000 to make room for new homes by the lake. The town was able to save its church and graveyard from the rising waters. They were moved to a spot not far from the current shoreline, and today they rest peacefully by the lake.
Lake Glenville and Its Popularity
The original town of Glenville was flooded in 1941. This happened when a company called Nantahala Power and Light built a hydroelectric dam to create Lake Glenville on the Tuckasegee River. Even though the old town is gone, the area next to the lake is still called Glenville. It has its own ZIP Code, 28736, which is mostly used for the many vacation homes built around the lake.
Today, Glenville is a very popular place for tourists and people who want a second home. Many expensive homes have been built around the lake.
Lake Glenville is famous for bass fishing and hosts fishing tournaments every year. You can find many different kinds of fish here, including smallmouth bass, lake trout, crappie, largemouth bass, bream, perch, and even some types of catfish. Many creeks, like Cedar Creek, Mill Creek, Hurricane Creek, and Pine Creek, feed water into Lake Glenville.
Lake Glenville is the highest lake of its kind east of the Mississippi River, with its surface about 3,492 feet above sea level. Many people who own homes here during the warmer months come from Florida or Georgia. They enjoy Glenville because it offers a break from the hot summer weather in the southern United States. The average summer temperature in Glenville is around 83 degrees Fahrenheit, which is much cooler than nearby areas.
