Exploring Glunimore Island
Glunimore Island is quite small, only about 200 meters (656 feet) long. It rises to a height of 27 meters (89 feet). On the northern side of the island, there is a cool cave right on the shoreline.
Surrounding Waters
The island is surrounded by a reef that appears when the tide is low. This reef stretches to the north and east. Many other hidden reefs make the waters between Glunimore, Sanda, and Sheep Island a bit tricky for boats. There's even another dangerous rock called Paterson's Rock about 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) to the east.
Despite these challenges, the area formed by the three islands creates a natural harbor. This harbor is often used by boats sailing around the Mull of Kintyre.
Home to Amazing Birds
Glunimore Island and its neighbor, Sheep Island, are very important places for birds. They are the main breeding grounds for puffins in the Clyde area.
Puffins and Other Seabirds
Puffins are now returning from these islands to Ailsa Craig, which is another traditional breeding spot for them. Besides puffins, other seabirds like guillemots and razorbills also build their nests here. It's a busy and noisy place during nesting season!
A Glimpse into History
In 1899, two naturalists visited Glunimore Island. They were conducting a survey for the Natural History Society of Glasgow. Their visit helped us learn more about the island's wildlife and features.
Glunimore's Name Lives On
The name "Glunimore Island" has also been used for other places. A cottage on nearby Sanda Island is named Glunimore. You can also find a house with the same name in the town of Campbeltown.
