Golant (which is Golnans in Cornish) is a small village in south Cornwall, England. It sits on the west side of the River Fowey. The village is part of the civil parish of St Sampson.
Golant is about 2 miles (3 km) north of Fowey. It is also about 7 miles (11 km) east of St Austell.
The church in Golant is called St Sampson's church. It is named after St Sampson of Dol. This church was even mentioned in a famous book called England’s Thousand Best Churches.
The village is also located on the Saints' Way, which is a popular long-distance footpath.
Village History
Long ago, people could cross the river near Golant using a special shallow spot called a ford.
During the English Civil War in 1644, a big battle happened here. About 10,000 soldiers from the Parliament's army fought against the King's army. King Charles himself was in the area during this time. Many old cannonballs and musket balls from the 1600s have been found in the area.
Golant also used to have a train station called Golant Halt. It was right by the river, just south of the village. Trains ran there from 1896 until 1965. The old station building is gone now, and the spot is used as a car park. The closest train station today is at Par.
The Sawmills Studio
The Sawmills is a famous music recording studio that started in 1974. The main building is a very old water mill from the 1600s. This place has been around for a very long time, with its history going back to the 11th century.
Many well-known bands have recorded their music at The Sawmills. These include The Stone Roses, The Verve, and Swans. The famous Oasis album, Definitely Maybe, was also recorded here.
The studio was even shown on a BBC TV show called Three Men in More Than One Boat. This show featured Rory McGrath, Griff Rhys Jones, and Dara Ó Briain in January 2009.
Today, not much recording happens at The Sawmills. The building is mostly used as a holiday home for people to rent.
