The Golden Lamb Inn is the oldest hotel in Ohio. It first opened in 1803 in Lebanon, which is the main town of Warren County. The building you see today was mostly built in 1815. It still looks like an old colonial building.

The inn is called the Golden Lamb because a picture of a lamb was on its sign. This helped people who could not read know what the building was. Over the years, it had other names like the Ownly Hotel and the Lebanon House. On January 12, 1978, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is an important historical site.

Famous Visitors to the Golden Lamb

The Golden Lamb Inn is located on a main road between Cincinnati and Columbus. Because of this, many important people have stayed there. Twelve American Presidents have visited the inn. These include William Henry Harrison, John Quincy Adams, Ulysses S. Grant, and Ronald Reagan.

Other well-known guests include famous writers like Charles Dickens and Mark Twain. Harriet Beecher Stowe, who wrote "Uncle Tom's Cabin," also visited. Important politicians like Daniel Webster and Cordell Hull have stayed there too. More recently, in 2008, Republican candidates John McCain and Sarah Palin spoke at the inn.

Who Owns the Golden Lamb Inn?

In 1926, Robert Jones leased the Golden Lamb. He was the grandfather of Senator Rob Portman. In 1927, he made many improvements to the inn. He decorated it with furniture from the Shaker style.

Later, in 1969, the Jones family leased the inn to the Comisar family. The Comisar family also owned a famous restaurant in Cincinnati. Today, the Portman Family of Ohio still owns the Golden Lamb Restaurant & Hotel.

About the Golden Lamb Building

The Golden Lamb is a four-story building. It has many different areas for guests.

  • A main lobby where guests check in
  • A restaurant with a tavern and several dining rooms
  • A gift shop where you can buy souvenirs
  • Seventeen guest rooms for people to stay overnight

The old stables that were once part of the inn were removed. A parking lot was built in their place.

Stories of Ghosts at the Inn

Some people believe there are ghosts at the Golden Lamb Inn. One popular story is about a little girl named Sarah Stubbs. Another story tells of a lawyer's ghost.

Sarah Stubbs was the daughter of an inn caretaker. She lived a long life, but some believe her ghost is that of a child. People think she might have loved her childhood at the inn very much. There is even a room at the inn called "Sarah's room" [1]. It is said to contain some of her belongings.
