A Look Back: The Library's History
The Goodrich Memorial Library was made possible by Converse Goodhue Goodrich and his wife, Almira. They generously donated money to build a free library for everyone. The land for the library cost $6,000, and the building itself cost $20,000.
Building the Library
Construction of the library began in 1898. It was officially opened on September 1, 1899. A talented person named William Storey designed the building. He was the architect who made the plans for this beautiful place.
Facing Challenges
In 1933, during a tough economic time called the Great Depression, the money set aside to run the library ran out. This meant the library had to ask for help from the public to keep its doors open. When it first opened, the library had 6,500 books for people to read.
A Historic Landmark
In November 1983, the Goodrich Memorial Library was recognized as a very important building. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes buildings that are special because of their history or design.
Inside the Library: Cool Features
The library has many interesting features inside. You'll see fireplaces made of colorful brick. The rooms are finished with beautiful wood like red birch, Georgia pine, and cypress. There's also native spruce wood and red marble from a place called Swanton. The furniture is made of strong oak wood.
Upstairs Discoveries
Upstairs, you'll find an art room. It is decorated in an old-fashioned style. There's also a long hall where meetings can be held. You can also find an office and a quiet reading room. The art room displays several old paintings. There's also a special case with postcards and other items from Newport's past.
Natural Wonders Display
Perhaps the most amazing part is a tall wall of glass cases. These cases go from the floor all the way to the ceiling! Inside, you'll see a variety of stuffed animals and other natural curiosities. These include an alligator from Florida, an ostrich egg, and even a flying squirrel found right in Vermont. Because of how they were preserved long ago, only trained experts can handle and care for them safely.
