Where the Water Flows

All the rain and melting snow from Goose Eye Mountain eventually flows into the Androscoggin River. This river then travels to Merrymeeting Bay. Merrymeeting Bay is where the Kennebec River meets the ocean. Finally, the water reaches the big Gulf of Maine.

The south side of Goose Eye Mountain drains into the Sunday River. This river then joins the Androscoggin River. The northeast side of Goose Eye drains into Goose Eye Brook, which also flows into the Sunday River. Water from the west side of the mountain goes into the South Branch of Stearns Brook. This brook also flows into the Androscoggin River.

Hiking the Trails

The famous Appalachian Trail passes near Goose Eye Mountain. This long trail stretches about 2,170 miles (3,490 km) from Georgia all the way to Maine. On Goose Eye Mountain, the Appalachian Trail meets the Goose Eye Trail. This meeting point is on the summit ridge, about 0.1 miles (0.16 km) east of the main peak. The Appalachian Trail then continues east and north to the mountain's North Peak, which is 3,675 feet (1,120 m) high.

You can climb Goose Eye Mountain using a few different paths. The Goose Eye Trail, the Wright Trail, and the Mahoosuc Trail are all popular choices. The Mahoosuc Trail is actually part of the Appalachian Trail in this area. The Goose Eye Trail and the Wright Trail are great for a dayhike in the summer and fall.
