Gordo is a small town in Pickens County, Alabama, USA. In 2020, about 1,628 people lived there. This was a bit less than the 1,750 people in 2010. Gordo is the second-largest town in Pickens County, after Aliceville. The town officially became a town in the year 1900.

History of Gordo

Gordo has had a post office since 1847. The town's name probably comes from the Battle of Cerro Gordo. This important battle happened in 1847 during the Mexican–American War.

Where is Gordo Located?

Gordo is located in west central Alabama. It sits along U.S. Route 82. This road goes through the town from northwest to southeast.

You can travel southeast about 22 miles (35 km) to Northport. It's also 23 miles (37 km) to Tuscaloosa. If you go northwest, it's 8 miles (13 km) to Reform. It's about 37 miles (60 km) to Columbus, Mississippi.

Alabama State Route 86 goes west 14 miles (23 km) to Carrollton. Carrollton is the main town for Pickens County. Alabama State Route 159 goes north 31 miles (50 km) to Fayette.

The town covers a total area of about 3.2 square miles (8.4 square kilometers). Almost all of this area is land.
