Where is Gramais Located?

Gramais is nestled in a valley that branches off from the Lech Valley in Tyrol. This branch is found near a place called Häselgehr.

What are the Villages and Hamlets?

The town of Gramais is made up of two main parts. There's the main village of Gramais itself, which had 40 people in 2022. Inside the village, you'll find smaller areas called Dörfl and Gschwendt. The other part of the town is a small group of houses called Riefen. There are also some mountain huts used for farming or hiking, like Bergwachthütte, Gampenhütte, and Zirmebenhütte.

Who are Gramais's Neighbors?

Gramais shares its borders with several other towns. These include Bach, Häselgehr, Imst, Zams, and Pfafflar.

A Look at Gramais's History

Gramais was first mentioned in official papers way back in 1427. Its name might come from old words meaning "grassy area" or "weed-rich," suggesting it was a place with lots of plants.

People started settling in this area in the 13th century, coming from the Imst region. At first, the land was mostly used for grazing animals. But over time, it grew into a place where people lived all year round. In 1837, Gramais had 121 residents, which is many more than today!

Today, you can reach Gramais by a good road that is about 8.5 kilometers (5.3 miles) long, starting from Häselgehr. For many years, until 1938, Gramais was part of the Imst district. Then, until 1947, it was part of the Imst judicial district.

What Does the Coat of Arms Mean?

The coat of arms for Gramais shows a bull rising up from a red background. This symbol represents the history of the valley. It reminds us of the cattle grazing that happened there and how people from Imst settled the Gramais valley.
