Geography of Zams
The Inn River flows right through Zams. The town is located in the river's valley, next to its neighbor, Landeck. This area is an important meeting point for old roads. These roads once connected places like Vinschgau, Engadin, Bavaria, and Lake Constance.
In the Middle Ages, people had to pay a fee to cross the bridge over the Inn River. This fee was for trade wagons. The town of Zams includes two main parts: Zams itself and the much smaller area called Zammerberg.

History of Zams
People have lived in Zams since before the time of Christianity. The name "Zamis" was first used in the year 1150. Zams has often been a wealthy place because of its location. However, it has also faced many challenges.
In 1406 and 1703, Zams was attacked and partly burned down. The plague disease came to Zams in 1584 and 1635. A special cemetery for plague victims was made where the hospital is now.
In 1763, a big fire destroyed 42 houses. It also damaged the church tower. Another fire in 1911 burned half the village. Many old buildings were lost, and 54 families lost their homes. The church tower survived both fires. The church was later rebuilt about 50 meters away. This tall, free-standing church tower is a special landmark in Zams.
In 1812, a group called the Merciful Sisters of St. Vincent de Paul opened a hospital in Zams. This was their first hospital in Austria.
Kronburg Castle
The castle at Kronburg was built in 1380. It was rebuilt in 1504 after new owners took over. Over time, the castle fell apart. Since the 1830s, people have worked hard to save it.
