The Gran Premio Latinoamericano is a very important horse race in South America. It's like a big championship for Thoroughbred racehorses! This exciting event happens every year in different countries like Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Panama, Peru, and Uruguay. It is known as the richest and one of the most important races in Latin America. What makes it special is that it's the only major horse race in the world that changes its location and country every year.
The race takes place annually, usually in March. Horses must be three years old or older to compete. The race distance can be between 2,000 meters (about 1.2 miles) and 2,400 meters (about 1.5 miles). It can be run on either a dirt track or a grass (turf) track.

History of the Race
How the Race Started
In 1980, a new group called the Latin American Association of Jockey Clubs and Racecourses was formed. Jockey clubs from many countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay, joined this group. They wanted to create a big international race that would move to different member tracks each year. This idea led to the Gran Premio Latinoamericano. Later, Mexico, Panama, and Puerto Rico also joined the group.
Key Moments in History
The very first Gran Premio Latinoamericano was held in 1981 in Uruguay at the Hipodromo Nacional de Maroñas.
From 2000 to 2003, the race did not happen because there wasn't enough money. But it has been run every year since 2004. Since 2014, a company called Longines has sponsored the race.
In 2016, the race became open to horses from any country. It was also the first time that special drug tests were done by a recognized lab.
The most horses ever to run in the race at one time was 18. This happened in 1986 and again in 2020. Most winners were bred in the country they raced for. However, a few winners were bred in other countries, like Good Report (Argentina-bred, ran for Uruguay) and Deepak (USA-bred, ran for Peru).
In 2006, the race was shown live in North America for the first time.
Challenges and Changes
The 2010 race in Chile was delayed until September because of an earthquake. In 2018, horses from Chile could not race. This was because of a temporary ban on bringing Chilean horses into Uruguay, where the race was held. There was a disease outbreak at a training center in Chile.
The COVID-19 pandemic affected the race in 2020. It was run without any spectators. The 2021 race was moved from Peru to Uruguay and happened in October instead of March. Only a limited number of vaccinated people could watch.
Race Locations
Since it began, the Gran Premio Latinoamericano has been held at eleven different racetracks. These tracks are located in six different countries.
