The Granary is a cool old building in Bristol, England. It's also known as Wait and James' Granary. This special building was designed by Archibald Ponton and William Venn Gough. It's made of red brick with some black and white bricks and stone decorations. Many people think it's the best example of the unique Bristol Byzantine building style. It's so important that it's officially protected as a grade II* listed building, which means it's a really special historic place.
The Granary Building
The Granary was built way back in 1869. It was used as a granary, which is a place to store and dry large amounts of grain. Because it held so much grain, the building had to be super strong and stable. It also needed to be warm and have good air flow to keep the grain dry.
Later, from 1968 to 1988, this historic building became a popular nightclub, also called The Granary. After the nightclub closed, the building was changed again. In 2002, the owners, Bristol City Council, asked different companies to suggest ideas for fixing it up. The winning idea turned the Granary into apartments, giving it a new life.
From Granary to Nightclub
The Granary building became a nightclub in 1968. It first opened as a jazz club, started by Ted Cowell with help from a famous musician named Acker Bilk.
In 1969, things started to change. A group called Plastic Dog Agency had a very popular club night. Their club was getting too crowded, so they decided to move their Monday night events to The Granary. By early 1970, the club was mostly playing rock music. By 1978, it was known as an all-rock club.
