The city of Grant was named after a famous American general, Ulysses S. Grant. He was a very important leader during the American Civil War. Later, he became the 18th President of the United States.

For a long time, Grant was a township. A township is a type of local government area. Over the years, some smaller villages within Grant Township became their own cities. Finally, in November 1996, Grant Township officially became the City of Grant.
